First and Foremost – Lets not set expectations too high or you’ll likely end up like the people who leave bad ratings on Amazon. Noise cancelling technology will not stop you from hearing all noises around you. The best noise cancelling earbuds will do exactly what they were designed to do. They will neutralize sounds.
In case you’re looking for something different
What Does Noise Cancelling Earbuds Do? Noise cancelling earbuds will reduce ambient sounds. ex: car engine, plane engine, furnace sounds or office sounds. The earbuds will listen for tones using it’s microphone then send another tone that neutralizes both sounds. They are fantastic for helping you focus on something while still being aware of your surroundings. Claims are being made that smart earbuds will have the ability to block out sounds even more so using sophisticated algorithms. While blocking out the ambient sounds, they allow the more important sounds to come through (People talking).
What Does Noise-Isolating Earbuds Do? These will simply cover and prevent sound from entering your ear completely. Unless the sound is coming through the earbud itself. Many high-quality headphones will do the job very well. If you don’t want to be bothered by people talking, babies crying, or dogs barking then noise-isolating earbuds or headphones will do the trick.
The Best, the Cheapest, and the Smart Noise Cancelling Earbuds.
Cheapest Noise Cancelling Earbuds
The Sony MDR is a cheaper set of noise cancelling earbuds currently at $78. A few reviewers claim them to be the best for it’s price range. One claim states that road noises while driving is reduced 50% and sleeping is much easier while flying on an airplane. Much cheaper, but if it’s still out of range and still want something that works well. There is one other option with great reviews.
This is something you can’t go wrong with. The Matone Qy8 aren’t the best for making calls on but the overall quality of sound for music makes up for it. For a price tag under $30 they are the cheapest noise cancelling earbuds. I can assure they will be nothing in comparison to the Bose QuietComfort 20i or even the Sony MDR.
Noise cancellation technology requires important high quality features: A good Speaker, at least one high quality microphone, and software to quickly analyse and neutralize sounds. It’s important to consider this with the price you pay.
The Best Noise Cancelling Earbuds
Bose QuietComfort 20i
Rated #1 in the world is the Bose QuietComfort 20i. After reading the reviews you’ll see the appreciation fans have for Bose headphones and earbuds compared to others. Ambient sounds from engines and street mumble are almost non existent and annoying sounds fade to a low whisper. Many reviewers describe it like (Putting a muffler on less important sounds).
If you travel a lot or find yourself distracted by fans, furnaces, or wind whooshing then you would appreciate a set of Bose noise cancelling headphones. A review I read on The WireCutter rated them the best also but also explains that if you prefer high quality sound over noise cancellation then you may prefer Noise-Isolating Earbuds instead. They will provide higher quality sound for music while keeping away all other sounds.
Smart Noise Cancelling Earbuds
Maybe not the first smart earbuds as they claim but Bragi is taking pre-orders for the launch of The Dash. It could change many things if these earbuds hold up to the audio transparency feature. It’s controlled using an optical touch with taps and swipes. You can simply swipe to mute the sounds around you. Since they haven’t officially launched I can’t be certain of the quality. So if you’re waiting for others to test them out. I’m excited to fill you in on all the details when they do. For others who can spend a few dollars you can claim yourself a set for $299.
Keep an eye out for this one. It’s voice controlled and hands free with smart features. Elbee is designed to communicate with and control other connected devices. It’s also programmed with an advanced noise cancellation algorithm to block out sounds. They just launched a KickStarter campaign with over $50,000 raised in their first week. Launch price will be about $270 but early birds can get elbee for $149 to $169. Although you won’t be getting your earbuds right away, it could be a fun item to try out and show off.
It seems likely that smart technology will come forward and trump products like the Bose QuietComfort. From my standpoint I believe startups like Bragi and Elbee have tough competition with noise cancellation but new technology may give them the upper hand.
